PS5 Price Hike: The AI Did It
PS5 Price Hike: $650 for Standard, $900 for Pro Starting April 2
Sony is raising PS5 prices again. AI is eating the chips, and helium is in short supply.
Sony is raising PS5 prices again. Starting in early April, the standard PS5 with a disc drive goes up by $100 to $649.99. The digital edition hits $599.99. And the PS5 Pro, which already cost as much as a used sedan, jumps $150 to $899.99.
The official reason isn't *because we can*. Memory chip prices are spiking because AI data centers are soaking up all the supply, and manufacturers are prioritizing them over consumer gadgets. Sony's margins were already thin, so they didn't have much choice.
Zoom Out
This is Sony's second PS5 price hike in under a year. The UK gets a £90 bump. Japan and China are paying more too. People are wondering if Microsoft and Nintendo will have to follow suit if costs keep climbing, though Nintendo hasn't touched Switch 2 pricing yet. Give them time.
So?
If you've been waiting to buy a PS5, April 2 is right around the corner. As for the PS6, analysts are now talking about a possible delay into 2028 or 2029. The same memory shortage that's making consoles more expensive might also push back the next generation entirely. So, yes. Good times.
