VeryCodedly Today: OpenAI's IPO Dash, Apple Teams Up, Microsoft's GitHub Trouble
OpenAI files for an IPO, Apple teams up for its new AI, Microsoft pulls repos from GitHub, and there's more.
New day, new… news.
OpenAI Confidential IPO Filing
OpenAI files for an IPO, says it has "not decided on timing yet", as "there are things we want to do that are likely easier as a private company". No valuation, share price, or amount. No timing either. The filing comes just after Anthropic's and SpaceX's.
The first IPO will define what investors think AI companies are worth.
Apple Teams Up For AI
Lots of Apple news today. The company revealed Google and Nvidia helped build its most advanced AI model, Apple Foundation Model Cloud Pro. Not a joke, that's the name. It runs on Nvidia GPUs inside Google's cloud, with Apple's Private Cloud Compute privacy layer. It's similar to Google's Gemini frontier models.
They're running the AI race in a different way: Google provides the cloud, Nvidia provides the chips, then Apple wraps it up nicely in a silver (platinum?) bow, for its users. It's much cheaper.
Microsoft Pulls Hacked GitHub Repos
Over 70 of its open-source repositories were temporarily disabled on GitHub after getting hit by the credential-stealing Miasma worm (sibling of Mini Shai-Hulud). GitHub's automated systems caught the attack in 105 seconds (nice), but four Microsoft organizations got hit: Azure, Azure-Samples, Microsoft, and MicrosoftDocs.
This is the second time in weeks. First was May. Red Hat got hit last week, who's next?
Google Cuts AI Plus Pricing
They lowered the price of the AI Plus plan from $7.99 to $4.99 per month and doubled storage from 200GB to 400GB. Features remain the same: Gemini 3.1 Pro, Deep Research, NotebookLM, and family sharing, and price cut is effective immediately.
They could be trying to lock users in before Apple's AI rolls out.
US Judge Blocks H-1B Fee Hike
A federal judge blocked the administration's $100,000 fee on new H-1B visas, ruling that the executive branch exceeded its authority. The H-1B fee is dead.
For now. Another court kept it alive until September, so tech companies can breathe. For a few months.
Foldable iPhone? iOS 27 Drops Clues
Sneaky drop.
As per Bloomberg, the iOS 27 developer beta contains code references to folding hardware: "foldState," "mechanicalAngleDegrees," and "angleDegrees". Apple's repair utility mentions a secondary display, second cover glass, and additional light sensors. The foldable iPhone is expected in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro family.
Apple hasn't announced it though. iOS 27 beta is full of foldable iPhone hints and the code doesn't lie. September. $2000 American dollars, no abeg, no change. Get ready.
Xiaomi Claims AI Speed Milestone
Xiaomi says its trillion-parameter MiMo model can now hit over 1,000 tokens per second on a standard 8-GPU machine. For context, GPT-5.5 does about 68 tokens per second, Claude Opus 4.6 does about 71, Gemini Flash does 192, so if this works the way they say it does, it'll be a big leap. Faster tokens mean lower latency and lower costs.
They haven't proven it yet. We'll know whether it's real or marketing after the API trial (June 9-23).
OpenCV 5 Finally Arrives
The library that powers computer vision everywhere: your phone's face unlock, robot vacuums, medical imaging, etc. gets its biggest update since 2018. Anyone who's worked with cameras, robots, or images in code has probably used it.
OpenCV 5 can now run LLMs and VLMs (vision-language models) directly, no extra software needed.
That's all for Things That Happened. Come back tomorrow. Or else…
