Italy: Netflix Price Hikes Unlawful
Netflix Ordered to Refund Subscribers in Italy
A Rome court ruled Netflix's 2017-2024 price hikes unlawful.
A Rome court just ruled that Netflix's price increases from 2017 to 2024 were unlawful. The problem? The contracts allowed price changes without stating a valid reason, which violates Italy's Consumer Code. Netflix says it will appeal, but for now, the ruling stands.
The refunds add up. Premium subscribers who paid continuously since 2017 are entitled to about 500 euros back. Standard subscribers get about 250 euros. That's 8 euros a month for Premium, 4 euros for Standard, year after year. Not baby numbers, the figures come directly from the consumer association Movimento Consumatori (real name, not a spell). The court also ordered Netflix to publish the ruling on its Italian website and in major newspapers.
Netflix has 5.4 million subscribers in Italy. If they lose the appeal, that's a lot of refunds. The company revised its terms in 2025 to link future price changes to service upgrades or regulatory shifts, which likely protects them going forward. But those 2017-2024 hikes? The court says those were never legal to begin with.
