Russia Bans Snapchat and Roblox: FaceTime Calls Restricted in Digital Clampdown
Russia blocks Snapchat and Roblox, restricts FaceTime calls, as part of a growing crackdown on Western internet platforms. It's a significant step in tightening state control over digital communications.
Russia’s internet regulator Roskomnadzor announced today that it has blocked access to Snapchat (effective since October) and Roblox, while also restricting voice and video calls via FaceTime. The regulator blamed the move on alleged misuse of these platforms for terrorism coordination, fraud, and what it calls “extremist content.”
According to official statements, Snapchat was used to facilitate criminal activity, while Roblox was accused of spreading “extremist materials” and “LGBT propaganda,” which under current Russian law are treated as illegal.
FaceTime calls previously adopted by many users after restrictions on other encrypted messaging apps are now blocked nationwide. Authorities say the service was reportedly used for organizing illicit communications that evade legal oversight.
These steps mark another escalation in a broader crackdown on Western-owned digital platforms, following prior bans or restrictions on services such as WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube, and other social and messaging apps.
What This Means
For users inside Russia, access to several popular communication and entertainment platforms is now severely limited or gone entirely. For outsiders, it’s another example of how internet freedoms are being reshaped under state‑imposed controls. Whether this will push people toward domestic, state‑approved apps remains to be seen. For now, millions lose easy access to tools many around the world still take for granted.
