You Can Reserve WhatsApp Usernames Now
No more sharing phone numbers with strangers. Finally.
You can finally hide your phone number from strangers on WhatsApp. The feature doesn’t go live until later this year, but reservations opened globally on the 29th. If you’ve ever wanted a username, the time has come upon us.
People need to know your exact username to contact you for the first time, and the app won't suggest usernames to other users. There are also optional settings to protect you from new contacts.
Meta is also locking down usernames for celebs, public figures, and government entities, so it’s not like anyone can get just any username. Existing Facebook and Instagram handles are also reserved for their owners. If you run a business or have a following on another platform, you can reserve the same name you use.
To reserve one, open Settings > Account > Username. This is rolling out gradually, so if you don't see the option yet, you'll get a notification when it's available in your region. Once the feature goes live, you'll be able to connect without handing over your digits. About time.
