Clear Your Phone's Storage
Your Phone Storage Is Full. Delete These First
Exactly what to delete first, from recently deleted photos to WhatsApp videos, without losing anything important.
You get the notification. *Storage Almost Full*. Then a few days later, the camera stops saving photos. Apps won't update. Messages won't send. It's not an emergency, but it feels like one. The good news is you don't need to delete everything. You just need to delete the right things in the right order.
Here's the order of operations. It works on both iPhone and Android. Follow it exactly and you'll free up space without losing anything you actually care about.
Step 1: Clear Your Recently Deleted Photos
When you delete a photo, it doesn't actually disappear. It sits in a *Recently Deleted* folder for 30 days. If you're out of space, those photos are just taking up room you need right now.
On iPhone: Open Photos → Albums → scroll to Recently Deleted → tap Select → Delete All. On Android: Open Photos or Gallery → Trash or Bin → Empty Trash. Some people have gigabytes sitting here without realizing it.
Step 2: Offload Apps You Haven't Touched
Your phone stores apps you haven't opened in months. Each one takes up space. The fix is *offloading*, which deletes the app but keeps your login info and documents. If you reinstall later, everything is still there.
On iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → scroll down → tap an app → Offload App. Do this for any app you don't use weekly. You can also turn on *Offload Unused Apps* at the bottom and let iOS handle it automatically. On Android: Settings → Apps → select app → Storage → Clear Storage or Uninstall (no offload equivalent, so just uninstall if you truly don't need it).
Step 3: Check WhatsApp and Telegram
Messaging apps are storage hogs. People send photos, videos, and voice notes that auto-download and sit there forever. This can get huge without you noticing.
On WhatsApp: Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage. You'll see which chats have the biggest files. Delete the large videos or set media to expire after 30 days. On Telegram: Settings → Data and Storage → Storage Usage → Clear Cache. Telegram also lets you set an auto-clear limit for photos and videos. Do this for other messaging apps.
Step 4: Clear Your Browser Cache
Safari, Chrome, and other browsers store copies of websites so they load faster. Over time, that cache can grow. Clear it. You lose nothing, but you may need to log back into some sites.
On iPhone: Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data. On Android: Open Chrome → three dots → Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear Browsing Data → select Cached Images and Files → Clear Data.
Step 5: Delete Downloaded Music and Podcasts
Streaming apps let you download music and podcasts for offline listening. But if you're out of space, you probably don't need that playlist you saved for a road trip six months ago.
In Spotify: Settings → Storage → Remove all downloads. In Apple Music: Settings → Music → Downloaded Music → Edit → delete anything you don't need. Podcast apps have similar options. You can always re-download later.
Step 6: If You're Still Full, Check Large Files
On iPhone: Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Review Large Attachments. This shows you the biggest files in Messages. Delete old videos someone sent you a year ago. On Android: Settings → Storage → Files or Downloads. Sort by size and start deleting what you don't need.
Step 7: When All Else Fails, Reset
Sometimes the issue is a corrupted cache or a system glitch that won't clear. If you've done all the steps above and still can't free up space, a factory reset is the nuclear option. Back up your photos and data first. Then go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. Restore from backup and your phone will behave like new. This is a last resort. Again, back everything up properly before you try this.
That's the order. Start at the top, work your way down. Most people find all the space they need by Step 3. The rest are for when your phone is truly on life support.
