Microsoft's New Image Model Just Hit #3 on the Leaderboard
MAI-Image-2 ranks third on the text-to-image Arena leaderboard behind Google and OpenAI. It's free, no waitlist, and available now in the MAI Playground.
Microsoft announced MAI-Image-2 this week, and it's already sitting at number three on the Arena.ai leaderboard. That puts it behind Google's Gemini 3.1 Flash and OpenAI's GPT Image 1.5, but ahead of Midjourney, Flux, and pretty much everything else.
The big upgrades are photorealism (natural light, accurate skin tones) and in-image text rendering, which has been a pain point where most models turn signs and posters into weird blurry text. Microsoft says this one actually handles infographics, slides, and diagrams cleanly. It's available now in the MAI Playground, no signup required, though availability varies by region so don't be surprised if you get a geo-blocked message. They're also rolling it into Copilot and Bing Image Creator, but that's a phased rollout so expect a wait there.
So? If you've been bouncing between DALL-E, Midjourney, and whatever Google's calling its image tool this week, this is another free option. It's not beating the big guys, but being third in a field this crowded is a +1. And Microsoft has a habit of letting these things sit quietly until they either become a core product or disappear. Might as well play with it while it's here, assuming you're in a region that gets to.
