Ads Are Coming To Apple Maps
Apple Is Bringing Ads to Maps After 14 Years
Businesses will soon be able to bid on search keywords, pushing sponsored results to the top.
Apple Maps has been ad-free since 2012. That's ending. The company is preparing to introduce sponsored search results in Maps, letting businesses bid on keywords like *coffee* or *sushi* or *small chops* so their location shows up at the top of results.
It'll work like Google Maps or Yelp. You search for something, the highest bidder gets the top spot. Apple has been testing this for over a year and is expected to announce it soon, with the actual ads rolling out in a software update sometime in the next few months.
Why Now?
Apple's services business brings in over $100 billion a year, but it's under pressure. Regulators are circling the App Store. The $20 billion Google search deal is shaky as AI search changes things. Ads in Maps help fill the gap. Apple's ad division is already pulling in around $8.5 billion this year, up from nothing a few years ago.
So?
If you use Apple Maps, the top result might soon be the one that paid for the spot, not the one that's actually best. It's not the end of the world. Just Apple acting more like every other tech company. Worth knowing when you're searching for lunch.
