Sony Plans Fresh Reboot Of Spider‑Man Universe
Sony Pictures has confirmed plans to reboot its extended Spider‑Man universe with new faces after a string of underperforming films. Studio chief Tom Rothman said the reboot will bring a reset and fresh cast to the franchise.
Sony Pictures is preparing a reboot of its extended Spider‑Man cinematic universe, and this time the plan involves a fresh start with new people in the story mix. Studio chairman and CEO Tom Rothman confirmed this in a recent interview, saying the universe isn’t done but will be relaunched in a new form that moves on from the existing live‑action spin‑offs.
This isn’t just talk. Rothman was asked on The Town podcast whether Sony would revisit its live‑action Spider‑Man universe, which has included characters like Venom, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and Madame Web. He replied yes when asked if they planned a fresh reboot with a new cast.
Why The Reboot Talk Now
Sony’s attempt to build a shared universe around Spider‑Man spin‑offs never quite caught the same traction as the main Spider‑Man films or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After several recent movies didn’t perform as expected at the box office, the company appears to be recalibrating its approach. Rothman suggested the idea of scarcity, giving audiences fewer but better‑positioned stories, as part of the reasoning for slowing down and resetting.
None of this means your movie night plans have to change. There’s no announced release date yet for a rebooted franchise slate, and existing projects like Spider‑Man: Brand New Day and the Spider‑Noir TV series with Nicolas Cage are still part of the Hollywood calendar.
