Android Makes You Wait 24 Hours

Google’s New Android Rule: Wait 24 Hours to Install Unverified Apps

Google adds a mandatory 24-hour wait for sideloading unverified Android apps, starting August 2026. One-time process, then you're in.

Google is adding a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period for sideloading apps from unverified developers. If you try to install an app outside the Play Store that hasn't been verified by Google, the installation pauses and you have to wait a full day before you can continue. Once you complete the process, you're in. No repeat waits for that developer.

The process: enable Developer Mode, confirm no one's coaching you through the install, restart and reauthenticate with biometrics or PIN, wait 24 hours, then install. You can opt for a 7-day window or indefinite access after that first wait. Google says it's to combat one-click scams that pressure users into installing malicious apps. The extra time is meant to make people pause and reconsider.

Student and hobbyist developers get an exception: up to 20 devices without needing verification or paying a fee. For everyone else, the rule starts rolling out August 2026, hitting Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand first in September, with global rollout through 2027. So you've got time before this actually affects you.
